In summer 2020, Wood Buffalo declared a state of emergency after record-high river levels across the Athabasca, Syne, and Clearwater Rivers. Over 13,000 residents were forced to evacuate.
Flood mitigation requires more than temporary measures. Permanent infrastructure is often required to prevent reverse flow into stormwater systems during high river events.
